Submission Unveiled

Writer's picture: Hope Assembly Hope Assembly

In his sermon “Submit,” Dr. GreGory taught that real submission means surrendering our will, plans, and relationships to God so we can receive every good gift He offers. While the message seemed focused on marriage at first, it ultimately emphasized openness to God's blessings. Below are the key reflections.

The True Meaning of “Help Meet”

Pastor highlighted the Hebrew word used in Genesis for “helper” (often translated as “help meet”), which in the original translation is ezer. Far from implying servitude, this term is used in Scripture to describe someone who is, at times, more powerful—even referencing God as a deliverer. This radically changes the understanding of a wife’s role from being “a help meet” to being a crucial partner and a source of strength.

“God made Adam a deliverer…someone more powerful, a rescuer.”

This reframing reminds both husbands and wives that they are equal partners, each carrying unique strengths designed to uphold and support one another.

Submission and Trust

Throughout the sermon, Dr. GreGory kept returning to the word “submit.” In many Christian contexts, submission can be misconstrued as a one-sided dynamic. However, biblical submission recognizes that yielding reflects confidence in God’s design, trusting in Him over our own limited desires and understandings.

“Submitting to God means allowing Him to guide your decisions—even when it contradicts your personal preferences.”

Beware of the Supplanter

Pastor repeatedly warned of a supplanter—an enemy who wants to wrongfully seize your place in God’s plan. Whether it’s a wrong relationship or a detrimental career move, we risk losing our rightful position and blessings when we dismiss discernment. He urged listeners to tune in to the Holy Spirit and be cautious if they feel even a “mustard seed of hesitation” about a choice.

“If you feel an inkling of a pause in your spirit, that’s your sign to wait. God is so sure—when He leads you, He gives you peace.”

Learning to Receive

We often talk about giving—tithes, time, talents—but Dr. GreGory emphasized the importance of learning to receive. God promises to “give seed to the sower,” and in our season of faithfulness, we must be willing to accept God’s blessings. Sometimes, our reluctance to receive stems from pride, fear, or feeling unworthy. Yet refusing a gift that God freely offers can hinder us from stepping into fullness of life.

A Call to Obedience—Even If It Means “No”

In a deeply personal moment, Pastor shared how God asked him to remain single. His willingness to say “yes” to God’s “no” opened doors of unique ministry and provision. For him, obedience meant discovering deeper fulfillment in God’s plan than he could have found in following his own desires.

“When God saw my heart of yes, He made sure in life that someone would always be with me. There was no void—He filled every space.”

The sermon challenged us to revisit our understanding of submission, whether in marriage, ministry, or everyday life. It reminded us that God’s design for partnership is one of mutual strength and support, that discernment guards us from the supplanter, and that true submission ushers us into a place of blessing where we learn both to give and to receive.
